World Rankings November 2nd 2008 - Great Leap for this weeks Great Dane

Søren Kjeldsen from Denmark vaulted into the World Top 50 for the first time after completing a wire-to-wire victory in the last ever Volvo Masters at Valderrama. It sees him elevated to 47th place, a rise of 39 spots. A final round 71 was enough to finish two strokes ahead of England’s Anthony Wall and Germany’s Martin Kaymer while Lee Westwood finished in joint fourth place with Sergio Garcia, four shots back. That brings Westwood back into the top ten at ninth in the world, with Ernie Els top ten status now at real risk.

World Rankings October 26th 2008 - Sergio surges up the rankings (I hate to write that but you've got to pun haven't you)

Sergio Garcia got to his highest position ever in the rankings with a win at the Castello Masters. El Nino finally gets a sniff of what its like to be in the top three as he edges ahead of Singh and Harrington.

Rory McIlroy continues his steady progress up the rankings, moving another ten placings up to 81st with a joint ninth place.

World Rankings October 19th 2008, - Quiros decides the Top 200 was not a place he wanted to spend time in, so he just heads straight for the Top 100

There was one huge leap taken up the standings this week: Alvaro Quiros of Spain, who's been there or there abouts in recent weeks, took the Portugal Masters with some very consistent scoring by three shots. That was good enough to raise him from a position of 296th in the world to 94th, that's an absolutely huge 202 places in one week...

Second place Paul Lawrie moved from 267th to 158th, the former Open champion in need of that ranking points injection.

Up at the top end, Robert Karlsson continued his relentless march up the rankings, just leapfrogging Anthony Kim and Camillo Villegas to grab 6th in the world by taking a tie for third. The Huge swede remains in incredible form. Tying with him in third was Ross Fisher, improving his ranking by eight places to get to 32nd spot.

Joint tenth sees young Irish hope Rory McIlroy in the Top 100 for the first time, an 11 place jump sees him now 91st in the world.

Elsewhere in the world, Shingo Katayama moved into the top 50 with a win at the Japan Open, moving 18 places to 43rd.

The Justin Timberlake tournament with much too long a name to bother with, yielded no big movements of the scale of Quiros or Katayama, not in the Top 100 anyhow, winner Marc Turnessa and second place Matt Kuchar do get themselves now well placed to make a move on the Top 100 now...

World Rankings October 12th 2008 - One large step for Zach, One giant leap for young Charl...

Zach Johnson moved up 11 places from 44th to 33rd in the rankings with his win at the Valero Texas Open. 2nd place was enough to see Mark Wilson pop into the Top 100, up to 94th from 109.

South African Charl Schwartzel continued made rapid progress through the ranks as he lunged from 97th last week to 66th by way of capturing the Madrid Masters. The top portion of the rankings sees no movement as most took a wee rest to themselves.

The wee darlings must have been tired. That, or $810,000 top prize at the Texas Open wasn't worth getting out of bed for...

World Rankings October 5th 2008 - Great Big Karlsson takes a Great Big stride up the rankings

Robert Karlsson, with his win in the Dunhill Links Championship this weekend, has rocketed up ten places - from 18th to 8th in the world. It means that we now have two Swedes in the top ten, as he joins compatriot Henrik Stenson as a top tenner, pushing his countryman down to tenth in the process.

His two vanquished play-off competitors also made moves, Martin Kaymer up seven places to 34th, while Ross Fisher moves up to 38th from 46th.

Ian Poulter was hoping to have got a win, playing in the comparitively weak field of the wonderfully named Kolon-Hana Bank 51st Korea Open - (Ha ha, Kolon!) but was pipped into second by Bae Sang-moon, a Korean native. that was enough to boost him three places, back up to 25th in the rankings. He also will have enjoyed finishing one ahead of Anthony Kim, revenge for the "shoulder barging" incident at Valhalla which upset Poulter so.

World Rankings - September 28th 2008 ; Spiderman in 7th Heaven

Vijay Singh gets no boost in the rankings for his $10,000,000 paycheck this week but I doubt he'll care. Camillo Villegas, took his second win in a row to leap from a ranking of 17 last week to number 7 in the world this week. Quite a jump for the colombian spiderman. Second place Sergio Garcia, defeated yet again in a play-off, doesn't go up any places, but his points average improves to 7.23 from 6.69; he's now very close to double Major winner Padraig Harrington. Anthony Kim and Phil Mickelson shared third (they really do seem to like being close to eachother after the Ryder Cup) and that bumped Kim up to 6th from 10th. The likes of Els, Stricker, Furyk, Stenson and Cink, all plop down a few rungs on the ladder.

Lee Westwood was also vanquished in a play-off, a bad day for those seeking to redeem themselves after poor Ryder Cups. He moves up one place to 12th. His conqueror's name is too long to fit in the boxes below, Gonzalo Fernandez Castano, shortened to Gonzalo Fernandez, rockets from 159 in the world, to 91.

Hideto Tanihara, by virtue of winning the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open, moves from 100 to 70 in the rankings.

Colin Montgomerie just manages to cling to the Top 100 by the skin of his shiny white teeth despite missing another cut this week.

Just little switches and swaps of places as a win or high placing here or there becomes devalued over time. Brian Gay makes it to 97th 111th, he and Bubba Watson pushing Monty down to only 98th in the rankings. Could be bye bye Colin from the top 100 very soon, unless he pulls his finger out...
